Top 7 College Jobs You May Not Have Thought Of

If you haven’t called one of your parents begging for money at least once during your 4 years in college, you are probably Richie Rich and don’t need to. For the rest of us, searching for change in the community room couches, and using hangers to get food out of the vending machines in everyday life. At what point does finding a quarter on the ground become a life to change event? I don’t know, but that’s a no change will probably only hit in college. Sadly, sometimes being thrifty just isn’t enough, and we can only stretch our last $5 for so long. That’s why I’m here to give you a few ideas for some unconventional jobs that you can totally have in college. Check out these jobs that you can have in college, while still focusing on your studies–or your Netflix…probably that one.




1. Distributor

No, not drugs! Becoming a distributor for companies like Herbalife or It Works! is an easy way to make money. I sold Herbalife for a time, and I managed pretty well.

If you’re a good salesperson and have a good web presence you can make quite a bit of money selling products. Most distributors sell their products using Facebook and Instagram; and signing up is simple usually requiring you to pay one time for a starter kit, usually a little over $100. That sounds like a lot; but making your own hours, determining how much you make, and never being fired is priceless. Also, its pretty much the only job you can have while working in your underwear—unless you’re an exotic dancer.

2. Tutor

If you’re good enough in a subject, consider tutoring. Many schools offer a tutoring program or center that will pay you for your services to fellow students. Being a tutor is a great way to keep up with your studies, and help someone else in the process. It’s a plus if you’re tutoring someone in the same class because tutoring can help you understand the material more, AND you can get paid for it. Sounds like a win-win, doesn’t it?

3. On-Campus Job

On-campus jobs are perfect for those who live on campus and they are usually readily available. They are great because there is a variety of types of jobs…anywhere from facilities to the information desk to student leadership! Check with your campus’ career center to see if there are any openings.

4. Nanny/Babysitter

Watching kids is kind of a stable job and usually good pay. Most Nanny’s make anywhere from 10-20 an hour; or if you babysit, you can make your own schedule. That’s pretty good money considering you don’t need that many skills to apply. Register for a site like Sitter City or Care.com to find families who need child care, and start making a little extra cash today.

5. Pet Sitter/Walker

If you don’t like children, pet sitting is the perfect alternative. If you don’t like pets or children, maybe you can be a plant sitter (if that’s a thing). Plenty of people are looking for someone to take care of their animals while they are away. You can use sites like Care.com and Sitter City to find animal care jobs near you. The best part–pets can’t talk back.

6. Uber Driver

You just drive people around and get your car reupholstered every time someone pukes in it. Uber drivers make anywhere from $19-30 an hour. One of the best part about Uber is that you get to choose your own hours. Also, it’s a great way to meet people, and you’ll probably end up picking up your friends from time to time.

7. Blogger

Obviously I have to mention blogging as a means to make money while in college. Many college bloggers find success making money on their blog sites. Companies pay you to allow ads on your site, and the more blog traffic you have, the more money you can make. Hey, you might just find blogging is something you love, and potentially make a career out if it. As a plus, companies find it impressive when you can write on your resume that you’ve managed your own successful blog. If you want to give it a try just remember, keep it up, be dedicated, and post consistently.

In conclusion, having 23 cents in your bank account is not fun. Trust me…I know! In fact, it seems that everyone only wants to go out — which costs money. Don’t miss out on the fun; snag a job from this list that lets you do your homework and make extra change on the side. No FOMO here.
