Since the main thing that decides your roommate for the next year is usually a simple questionnaire, it’s no wonder that many students are terrified of getting stuck with someone who is impossible to live with! Thankfully, most roommate situations work well; however, this isn’t always the case. That is why in this post I am going to show you what to do if you don’t get along with your new roommate.
1. BE PATIENT
First things first, you have to make sure that you guys really don’t work well together. That means giving it your best effort to try to make it work. Remember, in order to be friends with someone, you first have to be friendly. So, I would suggest that you be kind, patient, and understanding. Take time to try to get to know your new roommate! Things may get better! If this doesn’t work, however, understand that it is not your fault as long as you tried.
2. DON’T BOTTLE THINGS UP
If it’s still hard to get along with your new roommate, it is important that you tell them about any issues that you are having with them. If you bottle it up, things will only get worse. Trust me, I learned this one from experience. One time, I had a bad roommate situation, and instead of talking to my roommate about the problem, I let things fester and grow inside until I basically couldn’t stand her. I think that if I would have been more mature and spoken up about the issue, maybe she would have done more to fix things. So, if you are having a problem, you can’t expect someone to read your mind. If you don’t speak up, they won’t know what is bugging you so they won’t fix it.
3. TALK TO SOMEONE
If you have tried to make things work and have spoken to your roommate about the issue and nothing has changed, the next thing that you should do is to talk to your RA. Notice, I didn’t say complain about your roommate to your other friends. That won’t help, trust me, I know. Instead, take some time to talk things out with your RA and see if she can help give you advice on what to do. If that advice doesn’t work, you may be able to consider asking her for a room change. However, you might have to wait to get a new roommate until the end of the semester. It just depends on how full the dorms are, but, as my momma says, it never hurts to try!
I hope that these three tips on what to do if you don’t get along with your new roommate help you through any tough roommate situation that you may have!
One of the biggest worries that students have, is whether or not they will like their new roommate.
